Too much is hidden behind a paywall for free accounts to really be feasible

OK Cupid is one of those sites I've used at various points in the last ten years or so. There's been times when I've gone out with people on there (though those relationships have been short lived), had hookups from there, and I'm reasonably familiar with some of the major changes on the site over the years.

One of the bigger transitions in recent years has been that more and more of the site has been hidden away behind a paywall. When I first used the site in 2014 or so, most of the site's major features were free to use. There were a few things that you had to buy a premium account for (stuff like being able to see who'd liked you account and so on), but enough of the site was free to use that it didn't really matter. A premium account might have more stuff, but the free accounts were easily used as well.

Ever since I think 2017-ish, the site has increasingly transitioned to being a more premium heavy service. This makes business sense for the company because they have to make their money somehow, and I guess it is a little difficult to be making money consistently when the service is optimally based around a revolving door of users. I'm not really sure it makes as much sense for consumers, because social media isn't a thing most people think of as being a thing you should pay for.

I think that's ultimately the story of a lot of the changes OK Cupid has made over the last three or four years. There's a lot of stuff that makes a lot of sense on a surface level, but the execution doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

The best example of this is the like feature. While five years ago, this was mostly just a premium thing that didn't necessarily affect the free user experience, now it's a central part of the site's design. Before you can message someone, you have to have liked their profile.

This makes sense on a surface level because that kind of easy proof that you liked each other's profiles can help with a match. It can also help cut down on some of the outright harassment you might expect to see on a site like this, given that there are people who would harass others if they didn't get a date. However, because you have to pay to see who's liked you, you end up missing out on a lot of potential matches if you're only using a free account.

The search function also leaves a lot to be desired. While once you could potentially search through all accounts, narrowing down the results based on your personal preferences, now you basically only get to see maybe five or ten accounts at a time, and you have to either like or pass on profiles if you want to see others. I think this is a silly design feature because it makes it more difficult to see how many people are currently active in your area, and how many people are just being recommended just because they happen to live in the same state as you.

You're also now unable to see who's viewed your profile and who hasn't. This used to be a fairly major feature of the site that was available with free accounts, but now it doesn't exist anymore. I think it'd make even more sense to have this kind of feature now that so much of the site is based around the like feature, because even if you didn't have a premium account, you might still be able to make an educated guess about who'd liked your profile and who hadn't.

The one good change OK Cupid has made has been to ask for text message verification when you sign up for a new account, similar to what you might go through to secure an email address. This can potentially limit the number of catfish overall on the site, especially over the long term, because less people will be willing to hand over their mobile phone number to an internet company just so they can screw around with other people for a little bit.

Still, overall, I feel like OK Cupid has gotten to the point where so much of the site's basic functions are hidden away behind a paywall for it to really be feasible to be using a free account anymore. I think the company would be better off just switching to a paid service at this point.

From a gem to a turd!

Used to be a premium dating service, advertised as 100% free. There is NO option to search for a potential mate. THEY will tell you who THEY have selected for you! I did not realize that we have become some third world country, like China or India! You can't view the pictures of members who have viewed your profile, without "upgrading" (they want your money). They have a dual standard when uploading photos, apperently women can post anything, including photos of kids and grandchildren with exposed faces. (Pedophiles love that!)

Okcupid's epic fall from grace to vile disgust

Used to be good, but now it's a total scam. I have met people on here in the past, but then they turned it into a totally crappy tinder clone and broke the matching algorithm. You can no longer browse people and on top of that there are tons of fake profiles and bots. I cancelled my premium subscription and they charged me again after cancelling and as soon as I FINALLY got that sorted and got a refund, I magically got 9 instant likes from a ton of fake profiles as soon as I went back to a free account.
Okcupid is THE example of how a dating site that was totally awesome once upon a time can become a totally disgusting, scummy, scammy, horrible business that I hope eventually dies for good. Such a shame.

Don't waste your money!

Not sure on the purpose of the Paid and Premium $99 for 3 months membership.
A rip off as you get 1x Free Superlike a day, then you have to pay more money to contact people...
These Superlikes are far from cheap.

Or like Tinder swipe right and hope for the best.
It's full of fake profiles, most peole are not resident in the country they claim to be in.

Contacting customer services - Well you have more chance of getting a reply from a paid Superlike!

Worthless, Sack of $#*!.

If you're a $#*!ed moron, please feel free to piss away your money on this pathetic, sack of $#*!, site. I'd rather burn my money in my $#*!, than piss it away on this utterly worthless, useless, sack of $#*! site. They, literally and I'm not kidding, do nothing for you - they take your money, shove it up a pitbull's ass, then snort it, all the while laughing at you. LEARN FROM MY MISTAKE! If you fancy pissing away your money, please go out into the sticks, shove a shot up your arse, then light the lot on fire and call it entertainment. You've come out ahead. The only 'females' on this sight ( and I use the term loosely, based on the swing of balls) are straight up men, and only if you are straight up gay will you walk away with anything but blue balls. Run, do not walk, away from this train wreck of a site. I will accept thank yous and high fives at the local pub.

Full of liberals

Nobody talks on here so can only imagine the women must get inundated with messages from men like every other site

It's better than POF but that's not saying a great deal and at least profiles are filled out

I did get 73 likes in 2 days but I needed to pay to see and can't help but think they weren't genuine likes at all

The women all seem to enjoy telling you how intelligent they are and how they're very independent and how they don't need a man in their life. I've always found that those who are intelligent don't need to tell everyone

There seems to be a lot of liberals who are on here and make it clear that unless you hold the same political viewpoint as them you're wasting your time. Such tolerance... unable to accept differing viewpoints

I'm guessing there's a correlation with the fact they've been single for years and the fact they're bleeding heart liberals. Still on the plus side most have cats so they'll be happy in their old age

Waste of money

Don't waste your money like I did purchasing OkCupid what a joke unless you're looking for a mail order bride as the stacks of profiles they provide you with, and I had my options wide open, yeah my stacks still became empty after 20 maybe 30 profiles and I was left with only the foreign stack available, yeah Green Card girls. It's as if they have no local customers to show you but I'm sure there's millions of lonely lives that fell for their lies.

Is there anyone there?

On the face of it OK Cupid has got a lot going for it. The questions section allows you to see if you and potential matches are on the same page. The profiles are often very well written and informative. However, once you pay your subscription things fall flat. The ‘likes’ you’ve paid to see are revealed and are found to have been massively inflated by OK C having seemingly displayed your profile in Asia. Twenty and thirty somethings. Presumably hoping to be invited to live in the UK with you. ‘Nearby’ subscribers are often at the other end of the UK or across the North Sea In Holland, Belgium and France. Pay extra for the ‘popular’ option and the profiles you see often appear to be anything but. For the past 7-10 days most of the stacks have been empty, all except the Passport stack that is, which contains profiles from the States or further afield in Australia etc. No use at all to me. Return a few hours later and the Match, Recommended and Nearby stacks are repopulated but most often with only one, two or three profiles, the same profiles in each. ‘Popular’ remains empty. Money well spent? I don’t think so. After an initial buzz it’s more like a ghost town.
Update: after my subscription elapsed the search option suddenly became populated with lots of profiles, nearly all of which I’d seen before, and my ‘likes log’, which I could no longer access, received nearly 30 ‘likes’ almost overnight. It feels to me that something fishy was going on.
